Who Is Served



Children and adults with special needs by:
  1. Promoting a professional level of VPFT practice.
  2. Developing certification standards for education and training in VPFT practice.
  3. Developing specific programs to serve each exceptionally challenged population that could benefit from VPFT.
Handler/pet therapy teams by:
  1. Educating volunteers in the practice of VPFT through a training seminar, self-study manual and on-site observations and trial visits.
  2. Providing levels of certification in the practice of VPFT.
  3. Providing dog testing and dog evaluations.
  4. Providing placement and placement counseling.
  5. Providing ongoing advice, support, follow-up and problem solving assistance.
All animals and privately owned pets involved in VPFT by:
  1. Developing standards for the use of animals in VPFT
  2. Vigorously protecting the welfare, comfort and well being of all animals used in VPFT.
Facilities seeking and agencies sponsoring handler/pet therapy teams by:
  1. Matching volunteer interest surveys with the facility’s needs.
  2. Maintaining lists of all groups providing or sponsoring handler/pet therapy teams.
  3. Maintaining lists of all facilities and agencies seeking handler/pet teams.
  4. Maintaining lists of types of pet therapy services being sought and being offered.
  5. Maintaining lists of specific individuals with special needs receiving or requiring VPFT.
Facilities being served by handler/pet teams by:
  1. Providing follow-up and evaluation services.
