PHP “Romps with the Animals” at Washington Cty Humane Society (WCHS)

This past July PHP was invited to “Romp with the Animals” as part of WCHS’s summer camp.  PHP handlers and their dogs gathered to share some laughter and a bit of education with students attending this year’s camp.  There was interactive group discussion and a demonstration of Therapy Dog Accreditation requirements including a group sit/down stay and 35 foot recall!  All owners and dogs performed marvelously – better than most “Open” obedience classes – way to go handlers!  But the highlight for all involved was the individual time each handler and dog got to spend with small groups of children. Loraine Bahr and “Sophie” read to the children about “Chweenie Dogs” just like Sophie.  Sharon Pauley and “Sparky” jumped through hoops.  Barb Pierce and “Dottie” did circles, spins and played catch.  Some, like Amy Hanson and “Libby” and Ann Bruder and “Chyenne” spent time talking and getting/giving the dogs tummy rubs.  Linda Timm and “Bernie” demonstrated how to teach a dog new trick using a target. And our newest PHP Graduate “Skokie” along with his two handlers, Penny Kroening and Kathie Hartl participated in his very first pet therapy event!
