Hello

A Morning of Fun and Bit of Education at Bethlehem Lutheran Child Care

This past summer Pets Helping People spent a most memorable morning with the delightful children and staff at Bethlehem Lutheran Child Care (BLCC) in Germantown.  During our visit two different groups of PHP handler’s and their dogs brought smiles, joy and a bit of education to over 60 children.  Discussing what it takes to become a therapy dog, many of the children giggled upon learning the dogs have to pass a test!  Part of the ministry of the church with the same name, BLCC offers child care services to members and those within the community.  During their summer program, fun and “out of the norm” on-site presentations and/or off-site field trips are planned on a weekly basis. Pets Helping People was honored to be one of these activities! We send a sincere thank you to Melissa Kreuser for inviting us and coordinating our time there and to Liz Sherwood, Cheryl Herriges, Lisa Koschnitzke, Ruth Wisniewski, and Director, Stephanie Silvis for all your assistance.  We had a truly wonderful time.

[pullquote2 align=”center” textColor=”#AF1E2D”]“The children absolutely LOVED getting a chance to see the dogs and also learn a great deal about what an incredible asset they can be to the healing, therapy and overall well-being of the people they meet. Some of the children, who started the day with a slight fear of the four-legged friends, found their courage and even pet some of the animals by the end of the presentation!”

PHP “Romps with the Animals” at Washington Cty Humane Society (WCHS)

This past July PHP was invited to “Romp with the Animals” as part of WCHS’s summer camp.  PHP handlers and their dogs gathered to share some laughter and a bit of education with students attending this year’s camp.  There was interactive group discussion and a demonstration of Therapy Dog Accreditation requirements including a group sit/down stay and 35 foot recall!  All owners and dogs performed marvelously – better than most “Open” obedience classes – way to go handlers!  But the highlight for all involved was the individual time each handler and dog got to spend with small groups of children. Loraine Bahr and “Sophie” read to the children about “Chweenie Dogs” just like Sophie.  Sharon Pauley and “Sparky” jumped through hoops.  Barb Pierce and “Dottie” did circles, spins and played catch.  Some, like Amy Hanson and “Libby” and Ann Bruder and “Chyenne” spent time talking and getting/giving the dogs tummy rubs.  Linda Timm and “Bernie” demonstrated how to teach a dog new trick using a target. And our newest PHP Graduate “Skokie” along with his two handlers, Penny Kroening and Kathie Hartl participated in his very first pet therapy event!

[pullquote2 align=”center” textColor=”#AF1E2D”]Connecting kids with dogs through sharing Bernie with them is very rewarding. Seeing the kids faces light up, watching some of them overcome a fear, and answering their questions confirms how much programs like Waggin Tails are needed.

2015 Annual Graduation

_DSC1909On Sunday, August 23 we celebrated the largest ever Graduating Class in PHP’s history.  Since August of 2014 forty (40) sensitive humans and caring canines have made the commitment to bring the joy of a cold nose and wagging tail to others.  Inspiring for all are the large number of family pairs – husbands and wives, fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, committed partners.  It is particularly special when the belief in the healing power of animal interactions is shared and nurtured within the entire family. Additionally, 3 junior handlers joined our family and one owner, Ann Bruder, brought her 3 German Shepherds through our program “Harley”, “Tess” and “Cheyenne”.  “I wanted to visit too many places for just one dog.  Now, I get to take each dog to a couple places each week”, shared Ann.

Our training team of Heidi LaCosse, Erin Hennen and Diane Miller introduced the graduates and Board members took an active part in the celebration too. Janine Gruna delivered a heartwarming and very inspirational commencement address and Kari Schmidt and Tony Arsiniega lead those present in Blessings over the Handlers and Dogs.

We are so proud of all our new teams and are humbled that they chose to do this with our organization. Please welcome the…
